EXPERIENCE SUMMARY
Current Projects — Vice President of APTECH’s Petrochemical Office, responsible for the successful growth and management of a dynamic engineering consulting office. Developed and implemented asset management, mechanical integrity and risk based inspection programs for worldwide client base and provided training courses on all continents. Experience includes the management and implementation of these programs in chemical plants, refineries and gas plants. This work is intended to conform to OSHA 1910, Mechanical Integrity guidelines, EPA regulations and the API emerging technology on Risk Based Inspection. Related work has included the development of asset, risk and reliability programs for various facilities as well as the development of specific inspection plans, conforming to ASME and API guidelines, for individual equipment items.
Additional projects include the completion of numerous litigation support projects, failure analyses, training courses and presentations, and fitness for service evaluations.
Corrosion Management — Contract involved the updating and analysis of all UT data on the Plant Corrosion Management System (PCMS). Responsibilities included training technicians, inspectors, and managers in the correct use of the corrosion management system. Procedures were written and programs instituted to ensure the integrity of data acquired by technicians in the field and the analysis of that data.
A further contract at the Mossgas Refinery involved the planning and coordination of piping and vessel corrosion monitoring during a six-week shutdown. This included data gathering and analysis, updating of procedures and isometric drawings, and detailed reporting on piping and vessel integrity.
Piping Corrosion Management — Responsible for the planning and coordination of all piping corrosion monitoring during a three-month shutdown period at the Caltex Refinery. This work utilized the Plant Corrosion Management System (PCMS) to plan and control the shutdown monitoring. Responsibilities included the supervision of NDT technicians and the downloading and analysis of UT data, as well as final reporting to inspectors and management.
Other experience at the Caltex Refinery has included the creep assessment of refinery lines and vessels, corrosion monitoring, metallurgical examination, and failure analysis of refinery equipment.
M.S., Materials Engineering Department, University of Cape Town (1993 to 1995) — Included course work, industrial contract work, tutoring, lecturing, and research. Course work covered materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Industrial work included three months at the Inspection Department of the Caltex Oil Refinery and consulting work for Swartklip Products (pyrotechnics) and University clients.
Chief Project Officer — Responsibilities included the management of projects relating to the physical and chemical processes involved in the pyrotechnic and explosives industry, as well as the handling of dangerous chemicals and explosives. Promotion from Project Officer to Senior Project Officer, to Chief Project Officer and secret security clearance. Project management included the design and purchasing of equipment, customer liaison, staff supervision, and the coordination of experimental work and field trials, and a systems approach to the design and industrialization of new products. Achievements include a Chairmans Award for outstanding development work. A patent is pending for a vehicular screening system developed for the company.
Research Chemist — Responsibilities included laboratory analysis and sampling of all raw materials, chemicals, and finished products associated with the pulp and paper industry, as well as the management of mill trials and pilot plants.
